SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police are conducting an investigation after a 24-year-old man drowned in a pond in Shelby County.

Police responded to a call in reference to a possible drowning early Monday morning around 2:45 a.m. near 3000 West County Road 450 North near the border of Fairland and Shelbyville. Multiple agencies responded to the scene and a search and dive operation was performed.

At approximately 4 a.m., divers with the Indiana State Police located the victim approximately 15 yards from shore. The victim was identified as Caleb M. Wilson-Gill, 24, of Fairland.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim had successfully attempted to swim across the small lake, but he began to struggle on the swim back. The victim went under the surface of the water and was not seen again. Two people that were fishing with the man called 911 and were able to give a “last seen” point.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine an exact cause of death.

They found that the victim had worked all evening and went fishing directly after work. He was dehydrated which caused his muscles to cramp thus he struggled to swim and drown.

It is important that you keep yourself hydrated during the summer months. Drink plenty of fluids (preferably water) not only before you start your work activities, but continually during your shift.
